Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Sit down with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Both characters face the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
